Who doesn't love a free AC installation estimate?

Estimates are always free at Freezing Mechanical. And unlike some other contractors, we’ll introduce you to at least four system options based on the needs of your home and budget. It’s a risk-free, no-obligation visit that you’ll be glad you took advantage of.

What factors affect the cost of an AC installation?

  • SEER Rating: A SEER rating is a score between 13 and 21 found on all modern AC systems. Generally speaking, the higher the number, the more efficient the system, and the lower your monthly energy bills will be. Something else to remember: AC systems with higher SEER scores also have a higher upfront cost. So the homeowner will want to strike a balance between system cost and system efficiency that’s right for them.
  • System Size: The size of an air conditioner is a measure of its power. Generally, larger homes require more powerful air conditioning systems to cool the entire home. And the more powerful a system is, the more it will cost. A Freezing Mechanical Comfort Advisor can help determine an approximate size for your new AC based on the square footage of your home, among other things.
  • Home Modifications: Central air conditioners aren’t just connected to your home’s ductwork. They’re also connected to your plumbing and electrical systems. If a home’s ventilation, plumbing, or electrical need to be modified or upgraded, it can add to the cost of the installation. Older homes tend to see higher AC install costs than newer homes, simply because older homes may need upgrades to one or more of their ventilation, plumbing, or electrical systems to run the new AC.

Why Proper AC Installation Is the Most Critical Step in Your System’s Life

The single biggest factor in how well your air conditioning system performs — and how long it lasts — is not the brand you choose or the price you paid. It is the quality of the installation.

Studies by the Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR consistently show that improper installation can reduce the efficiency of an otherwise excellent HVAC system by 30% or more.

That means higher energy bills from day one, a system that cannot properly cool your home, and components under stress that fail years before they should. Here is what goes wrong when an AC unit is not installed correctly:

  • proper sizing of AC to ensure proper airflow

Improper system sizing: An oversized unit short-cycles. It cools too fast, shuts off, and never properly removes humidity. An undersized unit runs constantly and still cannot keep up on the hottest days. Both scenarios increase energy costs and wear.

  • Refrigerant charge errors: Too much or too little refrigerant destroys compressors. Only a licensed HVAC technician with EPA 608 certification can legally handle refrigerant, and only a trained technician knows how to set the charge correctly to manufacturer specifications.

  • Improper airflow: Incorrectly connected ductwork, a mismatched air handler, or a poorly positioned indoor evaporator coil causes air leaks, reduced efficiency, and uneven temperatures that no thermostat adjustment can fix.

  • Electrical wiring errors —such as incorrect electrical connections, undersized breakers, a missing disconnect box, or low-voltage wiring that does not meet the control board specifications — are fire hazards—and grounds for an insurance claim denial.

  • Code violations: A system installed without permits or in violation of local building codes creates problems when you sell your home, file an insurance claim, or request warranty service.

  • Voided warranty: Most HVAC manufacturers — including Carrier — require installation by a licensed HVAC professional and adherence to manufacturer specifications to honor warranty protection. A shortcut on installation day can void a 10-year warranty.

Is It Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner? Here Are the Signs

Many homeowners wait too long to replace their existing air conditioner, paying for frequent repairs on a system that has already passed its useful life. Here is when it makes financial sense to invest in a new installation instead of another repair:

  • Your AC unit is 12–15 years old or older — Most air conditioners have a lifespan of 15–20 years with proper maintenance. As a system ages, efficiency drops and repair costs climb.

  • Frequent repairs are piling up — If you have needed two or more significant repairs in the past two years, the cost of those repairs is often better invested in a new, energy-efficient system.

  • Rising energy bills you cannot explain — An aging or improperly installed system works harder to deliver the same cooling, driving up energy costs month after month.

  • Uneven temperatures throughout your home — hot spots, cold rooms, or inconsistent airflow — are signs that your cooling system can no longer distribute air effectively.

  • Your system uses R-22 refrigerant — R-22 (Freon) has been phased out under federal regulations. Systems that use it cannot be serviced economically and should be replaced.

  • Your existing air conditioner has a SEER rating below 14 — Federal minimum efficiency standards have risen. A new energy-efficient system with a higher SEER rating can dramatically reduce energy costs.

Get the Right System Size — Why Bigger Is Not Always Better

One of the most common and costly mistakes in AC installation is choosing the wrong system size. In South Florida, where air conditioners run hard for most of the year, system size has a direct impact on home comfort, energy bills, and equipment lifespan.

  • Too large: An oversized AC unit cools your home so quickly that it short-cycles — it reaches the thermostat setpoint before fully removing humidity from the air, leaving your home feeling cool but clammy. Short cycling also puts enormous stress on the compressor, dramatically reducing life expectancy.

  • Too small: An undersized system never stops running on hot days, consumes more energy, and still cannot maintain a comfortable temperature. Uneven temperatures and high energy bills follow.

The correct system size is determined by a Manual J load calculation, not by the size of your old system. Your old system may have been incorrectly sized from the start. At Freezing Mechanical, every new installation begins with this calculation — it is not optional.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About AC Installation

How long does an AC installation take?
The process typically takes 4 to 8 hours. If your home requires significant ductwork repairs or electrical panel upgrades, it may extend into a second day.
Yes. Miami-Dade and Broward counties require mechanical permits. We handle the entire permitting process to ensure your installation is legal and your warranty remains valid.
No. Professional installation is required to handle EPA-regulated refrigerants and high-voltage electrical work. DIY attempts void manufacturer warranties and violate local building codes.
  • Replacement: Swapping a new unit into an existing system, usually reusing ductwork.

  • New Installation: Installing a system in a home that never had central air, requiring new ducts, lines, and electrical circuits.

A technician will inspect your ducts for leaks, size compatibility, and damage. Poorly functioning ducts can reduce your new system’s efficiency by up to 30%.
We install all major brands, including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, and Rheem. As Factory Authorized Carrier Dealers, we specialize in high-efficiency Carrier systems.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures cooling efficiency. Higher SEER ratings use less electricity; upgrading from an old 10 SEER to a 16 SEER unit can reduce cooling costs by 30–40%.
Yes. Most systems include a 5 to 10-year manufacturer parts warranty. We also offer extended labor warranties to ensure long-term protection.
High-efficiency systems often qualify for federal tax credits and utility rebates (such as those from FPL). We can help you identify which models maximize these savings.

Customer Review

The most professional AC installation anyone could have asked for...

“This was the most professional Air Conditioner installation anyone could have asked for. From the initial estimate and contract with Sales Manager, Carrol, to the incredibly efficient and consistent organization of the permitting, documents, work schedules, and city inspection by Service Coordinator Ileana in the headquarters, everything went perfectly. The new system functions like a dream and I feel confident that should anything be amiss in the future they will take care of it right away. Many thanks!”
