Why is My AC Leaking Water?

Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

When something goes wrong with your air conditioner, you need answers quickly. For homeowners and business owners in South Florida, one of the most common AC problems is water leaking from the unit or pooling nearby.

Your air conditioner naturally creates moisture as it cools your home. When the system is working properly, that moisture collects on the evaporator coil and drains safely through the condensate drain line.

If you notice water leaking from your AC, something in that process is not working correctly. Here are a few common reasons your air conditioner may be leaking water and what you can do about it.

Dirty Air Filter or Frozen Evaporator Coil

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow inside your AC system. When airflow becomes too weak, the evaporator coil can get too cold and freeze.

Eventually, that ice melts. When it does, the extra water may overflow the drain pan and cause leaking around the unit.

In Florida, where air conditioners work hard for much of the year, air filters should be checked regularly and replaced as needed. For many homeowners, this may mean replacing the filter about every 30 days, depending on the system, filter type, pets, dust, and usage.

A frozen evaporator coil can also happen when the AC system is low on refrigerant. If your home is not cooling properly or you hear a hissing sound near the unit, there may be a refrigerant issue that needs professional attention.

Clogged Condensate Drain Line

Your AC’s condensate drain line carries moisture away from the system. Over time, that line can become clogged with dirt, dust, mold, algae, or other debris.

When the drain line is blocked, water can back up into the system and leak into your home. If not handled quickly, this can lead to water damage and a more expensive repair.

Some homeowners may try to clear the line themselves, but the safest option is to have an HVAC professional inspect and clear the blockage. A technician can remove the obstruction, check for related issues, and make sure the drain line is working properly.

Broken Condensate Pump

Some AC systems rely on gravity to move water through the drain line. Others use a condensate pump to help move water away from the system.

If the pump stops working, water may not drain correctly. This can cause pooling, leaking, or water damage near the unit.

A trained HVAC technician can inspect the pump, confirm whether it has failed, and recommend the right repair or replacement.

Rusted or Improperly Installed Drain Pan

The drain pan collects water from your AC system before it moves through the drain line. If the drain pan is rusted, cracked, damaged, or improperly installed, it may not collect or direct water properly.

This can cause water to leak into areas where it should not be. Drain pan issues are especially common in older systems or systems that have not been maintained regularly.

If the drain pan is damaged, it may need to be repaired or replaced to stop the leak.

Don’t Ignore Water Around Your AC

Water leaking from your air conditioner may seem like a small issue at first, but it can quickly become a bigger problem.

An AC leak may be caused by:

  • A dirty air filter

  • A frozen evaporator coil

  • A clogged condensate drain line

  • A broken condensate pump

  • A damaged drain pan

  • Low refrigerant

  • Improper installation

If you notice water around your AC unit, it is best to schedule service before the issue causes damage to your home or puts extra strain on your system.
